Dream Analysis: Shaking Hands with a Six Fingered Woman

Paul says:  Last night, I dreamed I was traveling with my mother.  We were in some sort of vehicle.  It was very tiny, but we could still walk around in it. Maybe it was a little train car, I don’t know, but it felt very claustrophobic.  I was trying to be by myself when my Mom called me over to meet someone she had been talking to.  My Mother told me that this was an important person I should meet, and introduced her to me.  When the woman held out her hand to shake mine, I saw that her hand had six fingers.  The last finger seemed to be pointing in a weird way.  It caught me by surprise, and I was pretty disgusted.  I didn’t shake her hand, instead pretending to be distracted by something outside of the window.  I talked politely but couldn’t look at the woman in the same way as before. I kept looking at her strange hand.  After what I thought was an appropriate time, I smiled and politely excused myself.  I went back over to at the far end of the vehicle, but couldn’t stop thinking about that hand with too many fingers.  Even after I woke up, I could still picture the woman’s smiling face and the six fingered hand.  It shook me up.


Eric Says:  Dreams are ways our subconscious mind works through problems, processes information and communicates with us.  I like to begin with the feelings from your dream: you felt confined, isolated, disgusted when you met someone new and overall unsettled.  The narrow space in your dream indicates that you are feeling restricted and are struggling to feel free.  Your mother invites you over to meet some who offers to shake your hand.  Your mother represents the nurturing aspect of your character.  Your mind is telling you what you need to feel better.  Most of the time, anything your mother says in your dream sheds light on your hopes, dreams, or things that bring comfort.  In this case, your mother was telling you it was important to meet someone new.  This new person offers to shake your hand.  Handshakes often symbolize new beginnings and welcoming someone new into your life.  You are repulsed when you find that this person has six fingers.  Hands often represent a form of communication, in this case the oddity of the six fingers prevented you from communicating.  Discovering that something was not “perfect” with this new person prevented you from making a connection.  You stayed a polite period of time, but found you were distracted by this one thing that made the new person not perfect in your eyes.  Overall, I think your dream says that you feel trapped, wanting to meet someone new, but whenever you start to get close you notice something that goes against your idealized vision of who someone should be.  When you notice this imperfection, it is all you can see and you end up choosing to remain alone.  Being by yourself is not a comfort, because you still feel unsettled.

With the Tarot, I first pulled the Five of Pentacles and then the Magician.  In the Five of Pentacles depicts people are trapped in the snow just outside of a warm building.  The comfort you seek is inside.  You just have to take the first step and go in the door.  The Magician is likely to stand for the high standard you set for yourself and others.  Not everyone is perfect, not even you.  Finally, I drew the Empress, the mothering figure full of new ideas and comfort.  Try listening to this “mothering” voice that is telling you it is important to meet someone new.  The Empress/Mother is telling you what you need to do to feel comfort.  The power to change is in your hands (both five-fingered ones).
Paul Says: You hit the nail on the head.  I have always been a very private person with only a few friends.  I have been wanted to branch out and meet new people but whenever I first meet someone I focus on their faults.  I’m not a perfectionist at all, but I can’t help but see little things wrong with them.  It’s rarely about their appearance, more like the way they live their life, their finances, their friends, etc.  It’s becoming a real problem for me.  I’ll try to take your advice and focus on the good stuff.

Gurl, I really didn’t want to start out negative but the cards are the cards.  Ten of Wands (Opposition) Five of Swords (Defeat) and Seven of Swords (Hidden Agenda) all are telling me to tell you to watch out.  You must feel like you’re a cactus right now because you are surrounded by pricks.

TAURUS (April 19-May 19)
Now is not the time to give up, it’s all coming together for you.  Sure, it’s been hard but I always say some of my favorite things are hard.  Stick with it.  Remember if at first you don’t succeed, suck, suck until you do suck seed.  

GEMINI (May 20-June 19)
Thank you for being a friend.  Someone is going to come to you for something: might be advice, might be a favor, might be for something a little more valuable like your money.  Carefully consider everything before giving it up.  Remember, unless you have a sugar daddy, you become broke faster than you become rich.

CANCER (June 20-July 21)

Dream Analysis: Pearls for a Queen

Michael says:  I dreamed I had to get a party ready for the queen.  We were in a fabulous mansion and I was decorating.  Everything had to be perfect: opulence and glamour – my favorite.  I was decorating using pearls.  There was a big bowl of them, and I wanted to string them and hang them around.  The problem was I couldn’t get them on the string, and they kept rolling away.  Even when I thought I had a few strung, they would pop off.  The big bowl of pearls was becoming empty.  I started to become very frustrated and yelled at everybody helping me.  Suddenly I was back in my kindergarten class, but It wasn’t really my class and I was the  teacher, which is funny because I don’t work in a school and I don’t do children.  The kids were doing that craft where you glue pasta to paper.  The pasta was little shells which reminded me of oysters probably because that reminded me of the pearls I needed.  I woke up feeling very frustrated.
 
Eric says:  Even while you sleep, your mind is working.  It is trying to communicate and help you, but sometimes the messages are hard to understand.  The mind often speaks in metaphors.  When we think about pearls, we often think of the phrase, “pearls of wisdom.”  In your dream you are working on making complicated arrangements for a party in honor of the queen.  The queen is likely a female authority figure, and you are working very hard to impress her.  The trouble is, you are having trouble stringing your “pearls” together.  I believe this means that you are having trouble stringing your thoughts and ideas together in a way that will convey your message to the “queen.”  Every time you think you have it, the ideas slip away from you.  In your dream, you are suddenly transported from a showy, opulent party needing complicated arrangements your kindergarten class.  I believe that your mind is telling you to stop over complicating things, and worrying so much that your ideas are perfect and impressive, simple is better.  Return to the basics.  You guessed yourself that the shells the children had were oyster shells.  If you open one of those oyster shells, you are sure to find the “pearl” inside.

Using the Tarot, I drew the High Priestess, turned upside down.  The High Priestess symbolizes your intuition.  Drawing it upside down means you are ignoring your intuition and instincts.  Trust more in your instincts and stop worrying if your ideas are spectacular and over the top.  This is supported by your next two cards: the King of Pentacles, practicality and pragmatism and the Ace of Pentacles.  The King tells you to take a more straight forward approach and the Ace of Pentacles ensures that your hard work will be rewarded.  Stop always worrying about the sparkle, less is more.

Michael says: I have to give a presentation at work, and I am really struggling.  I couldn’t think of a “hook” to wow everyone.  I was focusing more on the big reveal, the “a-ha” moment, probably even more so than the information I needed to present.  I think your interpretation is on the spot.  There are a lot of presentations due that day, and I really want to stand out, but I want to be taken seriously too.  I’ll take your advice. Dream Analysis: What If the Lion Gets Closer?

William says:  I am walking down an alleyway with my boyfriend.  When I look over my shoulder, I see that there is a lion following us.  I whisper this to my boyfriend, but he doesn’t seem to care in fact he thinks it’s kind of funny.  I’m still nervous about it, and keep looking over my shoulder to make sure it hasn't come any closer. 

We come out of the alley into a crowd of people.  The lion is further away now and I almost forget about it.  There are so many people around; that I know the lion won’t attack.  I have a good time and my boyfriend and I return home.  As we open the door to my apartment, the lion jumps out and attacks..  I wake up feeling very scared.

Eric says:  Lions in many cases represent rage, either yours or someone else’s.  In your dream, you are walking with you boyfriend and the lion is close by.  You are in a crowd of people and the lion is further away and doesn't seem like a threat, but the minute you return home the lion pounces out of nowhere and attacks.  Back in the alley, alone with your boyfriend, you try to talk about your fear of “the lion” but he doesn't seem to think it’s an issue, he even thinks it is funny.  I am afraid that your boyfriend’s temper is the issue.  You are close to him, thus the two of you walking down a long alley together, and you don’t worry about his temper when there are other people around.  When you are alone, things may be different.  You feel his anger when the two of you are alone.  The email of your dream is anonymous, so I don’t know the depth of your relationship with you boyfriend, or the extent of his anger.  It may be represented by his mocking you, or passive aggressive behavior or it may be something more serious.

Dream Analysis: Boyfriends, Who's Cheating Who

David says:  I dreamed I was following my boyfriend as he walked down the road.  He didn’t know that I was following him, more like I was stalking him for some reason.  In my dream, I thought he was cheating on me, so I decided to follow him.  He turned around a few times as I followed, but each time he did I would hide behind a parked car.  After a few blocks, I saw him meeting with some guy.  I hid behind a car and watched.  From my position, I couldn’t see the other guy’s face, but I could see my boyfriend’s face and he was happy.  When I thought about the dream, I expected to feel guilty about dreaming that he was cheating on me but instead I was just happy for him.

Eric says:  One of the most frequent dreams is the “chase” dream.  Because it is so popular, it can mean many things, but if we look at the other symbols we can start to see a pattern.  I have found many times when dreamers see someone in the dream, that person represents an aspect of the dreamer himself.  In this case, the boyfriend you thought was cheating may represent a fear that you yourself may cheat.  You were following him, trying to catch up to him or “catch yourself” before you do something you regret.    The street represents your life path.  I wish you would have included more details, but they are fairly obvious so I am sure you will know what symbols like bumps in the road, crossroads or any roadwork you saw in your dream meant.  It sounds like your dream contained a very straight forward, but long street.  I would think in the waking world, you and your boyfriend have been together for a while.  Cars represent the way we travel. Rather than quickly speeding down the street in a car, you follow someone slowly, on foot, hiding behind parked cars as you go.  Parked cars normally show that your effort should be placed elsewhere, or a fruitless endeavor.

All in all, I would wonder if after being with your boyfriend for a long while, you did something that made you feel guilty.  Not anything major, since the cheating in your dream is only a suspicion and not a wish to pursue more.  Think of the feelings you listed associated with your dream: sneaking, hiding, feeling guilty but ultimately feeling happy.  In your dream, you boyfriend’s feelings are more straightforward; he is simply happy.  Don’t be so hard on yourself.  As you saw, your boyfriend seemed to be happy and in turn you felt happy that he was happy.  In the end you know that happiness is part of your relationship.

David says:  I’m glad this is anonymous.  I was out with friends earlier in the week and drunkenly kissed a guy in the bar.  It meant nothing but when I woke up the next day I felt really stupid.  It wasn’t long after that I started to worry that my boyfriend was cheating on me.  I guess I thought if it was so easy and available for me, it would be for him as well.  I understand that I shouldn’t worry so much and I am glad that I am happy with him.  The rest of what you said was pretty accurate too.

Dream Analysis: When Drowning Dogs Turn Into Turtles

Dream Analysis: Shuffling Cards Leads to the Death Card

Roger: I dreamed I was sitting at the table with my family playing cards.  As I shuffled the cards, I saw that some of them seemed to be stuck together with glue, and I had to pry them apart.  No one else seemed to notice, so I continued shuffling and dealt the cards.  My sister wasn’t playing with the family.  She said the game was a waste of time and I was angry that she wouldn’t join us.

Eric:  Your mind often tries to connect your feelings, concerns, even your intuition to familiar symbols and situations.  To dream of shuffling cards, correlates with your ability to strategize and plan.  You are trying to develop a plan to solve a current situation.  When you dream about shuffling cards it speaks of your indecision.  Rather than act, you are shuffling through the possibilities.  Often your mind uses a play on words to express what you are feeling, so the fact that the cards are stuck means that you are feeing “stuck.”  You are trying to think of options and make a plan to move forward.  Try as you might, you are not finding the correct solution and thus you feel stuck.

Roger:  That is very helpful.  I have been trying to find a new job for several months now.  It is hard to look for a new job after hours while working at a full time that I hate.  It takes so much planning and sneaking around to go to interviews and return calls employers while I am working.  My sister has been very successful with long term employment that seemed to come easily for her, so I guess part of me resents that.
