Dream Analysis: Encountering Your Ex at the Airport

Ryan: This isn’t a recurring dream, but one that affected me just the same.  I was in a small airport, waiting for my flight when my ex-boyfriend and his current guy came into the lounge.  I tried to avoid them, so as to steer clear of an awkward moment.  I overheard them talking about their trip; they were taking a different flight than mine. The guy left the room, leaving my Ex- waiting with all of their luggage.  I could see my Ex- getting frustrated while using the dream-airport’s automated computer system to order a hamburger.  I finally stopped hiding and went to help him.  Just as I got him his hamburger, his current guy came to doorway and called him to come and board the plane.  My Ex- gathered up all of their luggage and we said good-bye.

Kirby: To see an airport in your dream symbolizes a new departure in your life, something is about to begin.  The fact that your ex-boyfriend was departing on another flight may mean that you are starting to move on and are ready to go a separate way.   This new beginning may be troubling for you.  A computer represents a lack of emotion.  The same can be said when you see a hamburger in a dream; it represents a lack of feelings.  Seeing your ex-boyfriend with both may symbolize that you poured all your emotions into that person and now you are having a hard time letting go.  Despite this, you are starting to prepare for your flight.  Your boyfriend carried away all the luggage, symbolizing that you are ready to let go of your emotional baggage.  You dreamed of saying goodbye giving you the closure you need.

Ryan: I think that’s very helpful.  When I woke up from the dream, I was frustrated that my Ex- could move on so easily with another guy.  Even though it was a dream, I kept wondering how he could be with someone else when that person would leave him alone, make him carry all the luggage, not help him when he needed it, etc.  Even though we are apart, I spend more time worrying about if he is taken care of than I do worrying about myself.  I will take your advice and allow myself to heal and grow, without letting my thoughts of the past get the better of me.

Dream Analysis: Roller Skating on the 405 Freeway

Malcolm: I keep having this recurring dream that they have added a lane to the 405; unfortunately it is for roller skaters only.  At first I think it’s a good idea, and I strap on my skates and start down the freeway passing the cars stuck in traffic.  I soon catch up to a guy skating in front of me.  The lane is only big enough for everyone to skate single file, and he is just not going as fast as I want to.  I start to feel really frustrated.  Then, as I pass the Getty, I start to think he looks really cute from behind.  Every time I have this dream I hope that he will turn around because I can’t see his face.  I start to forget all about being mad at him for being so slow and begin to fantasize about what he looks like.  When we reach the bottom of the hill and both of us exit on Sunset.  I skate around him to see his face.  He is just average looking – not too ugly but not as hot as I imagined.  I wake feeling frustrated.

Kirby:  Malcolm, to dream that you are on roller skates implies that you are progressing toward your goals at a steady pace.   In the dream your progress is blocked.  This suggests that there are frustrations or obstacles hindering you from reaching your goals.   In the dream, you go from feeling excited about the journey, to frustrated, to enthusiastically fantasizing about the result, to disappointed.  I believe you are starting to be concerned that your goals are taking longer than you anticipated and you are starting to wonder if it is all worth it.

Malcolm: I agree with you.  Around the beginning of last year, I created a list of goals but most of them were hinged on first getting promoted at my company.  I put off starting a new relationship, taking a trip, even moving to a new place, while waiting for the promotion my supervisor hinted was coming my way.  I felt that I shouldn't start anything new until I saw how this new level of responsibility affected my schedule.  It’s been a year and the promotion still hasn't happened.  I think that is why I have been so frustrated.  I have started looking for a new job and I’m excited about the change.  I’ll take your advice and stick with my job search.
